Actor Eric Dane, known for "Grey's Anatomy" and "Euphoria," passed away on February 19 at age 53 from ALS. In his final weeks, Dane engaged with AI firm ElevenLabs for a voice restoration project. This initiative used past recordings to create a synthetic voice, aiming to restore his communication abilities.
His wife, Rebecca Gayheart Dane, shared that Dane was excited about the project as his ability to speak was diminishing. The successful recreation of his voice was an emotional moment for the family. ElevenLabs specializes in audio technology and is committed to providing a lifetime of free services to individuals with terminal neurological diseases.
The company plans to assist one million people, valuing their services at $1 billion. As part of their outreach, ElevenLabs produced "11 Voices," a docu-short series profiling users of their technology. Dane was slated to be featured but could not film due to his declining health.
Gayheart Dane will participate in a SXSW panel session on March 13 to advocate for the cause. She highlighted the profound impact of regaining a voice for communicating with loved ones and caregivers. The project aims to restore identity and human connection for those affected by debilitating illnesses.
