Empress Masako's Childhood Dream: A Zoo Keeper?

Empress Masako shared a personal revelation during her visit to Tobe Zoological Park on May 17, admitting her childhood aspiration was to be a zoo attendant. She and Emperor Naruhito were visiting Ehime Prefecture and made a special trip to the park.

The royal couple met Peace, Japan's oldest polar bear raised in captivity, now 26 years old. They inquired about her care, particularly the challenges of raising her as a cub and her current health. Peace's journey has been remarkable; she was hand-reared by zookeeper Atsuhiro Takaichi after her mother was unable to care for her.

Takaichi's dedication involved intensive bottle-feeding and even teaching Peace to swim. The polar bear has also faced health issues, including epilepsy and, more recently, injuries to her paw, from which she has thankfully recovered. Her inspiring story has garnered significant public attention and affection.

Upon seeing Peace, Empress Masako confided her dream job to zoo director Takaaki Ikeda. Ikeda expressed willingness to support aspiring zookeepers, noting that some staff began their animal care journeys as students at the park.
