During their 30-minute ascent, Beerkus proposed to Nikolau on a perch before they continued their descent.
The pair accessed the spire through a maintenance hatch on the 102nd floor, according to the NYPD. They were taken into custody following the stunt. This escapade occurred amidst a heatwave affecting the eastern United States, though temperatures at their altitude were slightly cooler than on the ground.
Beerkus and Nikolau are known internationally for their illegal "rooftopping" expeditions, having previously climbed some of the world's tallest structures. Their daring climb and subsequent engagement have garnered significant attention on social media, with photos of the event shared widely, including an image of Nikolau's engagement ring.
