According to the show's creator, Darren Star, the new season will see Emily exploring her budding romance with Marcello, a development that is expected to provide a fresh dynamic for the character. "Marcello is a whole other adventure that we want for Emily because we ultimately want Emily to be able to have a better work/life balance," Star revealed.
