Cassandra Peterson, known globally as Elvira, is embracing a new phase of life, signaling a move away from her iconic persona. While the character first rose to fame on a local Los Angeles TV show in 1981 and later in the 1988 film, Peterson has recently expressed a desire to retire the costume. She admitted in September 2025 to PEOPLE that she's "mostly retired the costume," comparing it to a boxer leaving the ring at their peak.
In 2021, Peterson released her memoir, "Yours Cruelly, Elvira: Memoirs of the Mistress in the Dark," which marked her public coming out as "sexually fluid." The book also introduced her partner of many years, Teresa "T" Wierson. Peterson shared that being open about her relationship has brought her a sense of lightness and authenticity.
Beyond her personal life, Peterson remains an active advocate. She hosted an AIDS telethon in 1993, raising $1.6 million for patient care. Her commitment stems from losing a friend early in the epidemic, motivating her lifelong goal to raise awareness and support for those affected by HIV and AIDS.
While stepping back from the Elvira persona, Peterson continues to engage with her fans. She released a goth-themed cookbook in September 2025 and has two books and two movies planned. Recent appearances include a non-Elvira role in "R.L. Stine's Pumpkinhead 2" premiering October 2026 and an appearance as herself in a Vincent Price documentary in November 2026.
