Elton John's 1970 romantic ballad, "Your Song," is celebrated as one of the greatest love songs ever written. The iconic melody was reportedly composed by Elton John in a swift 20-minute session after receiving the lyrics from his songwriting partner, Bernie Taupin.
Taupin recalled writing the original lyric on scrap paper at John's mother's home in Northwood Hills, London. He characterized the song as reflecting an inexperienced perspective on love, calling it a "gem" and an "old friend." John himself stated in a 2013 interview that the lyric was so strong, he couldn't "f**k this one up."
The composition of "Your Song" at age 22 for John and 19 for Taupin was a pivotal moment. It gave them immense confidence, representing a significant musical advancement beyond their debut album, "Empty Sky." John noted that the song's resonance has only deepened with age and repeated performances.
