Ghanaian artist El Anatsui is gaining international recognition for his unique sculptures made from discarded liquor bottle caps. These works, often resembling grand tapestries, transform everyday waste into art.
In early March, one of Anatsui's creations, titled "G6" (2023), was auctioned at Sotheby's in London, selling for $995,000. The proceeds were donated to the Royal Academy of Arts, where Anatsui holds honorary status. This sale follows the record $2.23 million fetched by his piece "Prophet" at Christie's in 2023.
Anatsui's art, characterized by the visible brand names on the bottle caps stitched together with copper wire, is celebrated for its intricate detail and scale. His installations have been featured in prestigious museum collections, and he was notably selected to create a site-specific installation for Tate Modern's Turbine Hall during the 2023-24 period.
