The EFP Future Frames program, dedicated to emerging European filmmaking talent, is set to feature at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival next month. This initiative, organized by European Film Promotion with support from the Creative Europe - MEDIA Programme of the European Union, will see ten recent film school graduates present their short films. These filmmakers, nominated by their national film promotion institutes and selected by the festival's artistic team, will engage in a curated program designed to boost their careers.
The selected works reflect the diverse creative landscape shaping European cinema. Among them is Finnish director Helmi Donner's "The Lightning Rod," a poetic horror drama that previously screened at the Cannes Film Festival. Themes of family, memory, and unresolved histories are prominent, as seen in Croatian director Jozo Schmuch's "Shallow Ground" and Lithuanian filmmaker Arnas Balčiūnas's "Past the Hill of Napoleon's Hat," which also garnered selection for the Cannes Critics' Week Short Film Competition.
Other directors explore diverse themes and styles. Swiss-Korean director Hae-Sup Sin's "Ban Dal" delves into international adoption, while Spanish director Júlia Coldwell Serra's "Nobody Barks" uses absurdist comedy. Czech filmmaker Marie Lukáčová's "Orla" is an eco-feminist fairytale, and French director Teilo Quillard's "Zampano" offers a dreamlike narrative. The lineup also includes works addressing identity and growing up, such as Dutch director Ollie Launspach's "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and Swedish director André Vaara's "Sister of Mine."
In addition to festival screenings, the program offers significant career development opportunities. Allwyn will present a one-month scholarship in Los Angeles to one selected director, awarded by a jury of U.S. talent agents. Furthermore, a new partnership with Les Arcs Industry Village will grant one participant entry into their Talent Village program, with the final selection made by the Industry Village team. Variety serves as the main media partner for Future Frames.
