100+ Reptiles Seek New Home as Arts Hub Closes
24 Oct
Summary
- Edinburgh's St Margaret's House arts hub is closing.
- RiverRescue, a large reptile rescue, must relocate.
- The building sale forces out 150 artists and charities.
St Margaret's House, a prominent Edinburgh arts hub housing approximately 150 artists, businesses, and charities, is scheduled to close its doors by January 24, 2027. Tenants received notice at the end of September that the building has been sold, requiring them to vacate within four months. This includes AJ River's RiverRescue, one of Scotland's largest exotic animal rescues, which cares for over 100 snakes, lizards, and tortoises.
River, who established the rescue due to a noted need in Scotland, faces significant hurdles in relocating his animals. The new premises must meet specific requirements for ventilation, heating, and power for specialized equipment. Meanwhile, other long-term tenants, such as sewing instructor Jen Skedd, also express deep concern about finding affordable and suitable new spaces within Edinburgh, noting a rise in rents and a decrease in available art venues over recent years.
The building's owners, Caledonian Trust, stated that the property had been on the market and that the building no longer met necessary standards for its future. Scot-ART, the charity that sublets the spaces, has expressed pride in supporting grassroots arts organizations for two decades and is working towards a more sustainable future. The impending closure represents a significant loss to the creative community and those who rely on the services offered within St Margaret's House.
