Eddie Murphy has clarified the reasons behind his early departure from the 2007 Academy Awards ceremony. Despite being nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Dreamgirls, Murphy stated he left to avoid being a source of pity after his loss to Alan Arkin. He did not want to be perceived as the "sympathy guy" throughout the evening.

Murphy recalled predicting Arkin's win months earlier, having seen his performance in Little Miss Sunshine and recognizing its Oscar-worthy quality. He acknowledged that Oscar decisions involve numerous intangible factors beyond acting, including campaigning and an actor's career history, which he now understands contribute significantly to the outcome.

Reflecting on his experiences, the actor described award shows as a "mindf---" when leaving empty-handed, especially after the effort of attending. He now views winning an Oscar as a complex interplay of art and external influences, rather than a predictable outcome based solely on performance.
