Sheeran's Lawsuit Ordeal Fuels 'Old Phone' Creation
15 Feb
Summary
- Sheeran wrote 'Old Phone' after rediscovering his old phone.
- The phone contained messages from 2015 and 2007.
- He hadn't used the phone since a 2015 Australian tour.

During his Loop Tour in Sydney, Ed Sheeran shared with an audience of 70,000 at Accor Stadium how a prolonged copyright lawsuit led to one of his most personal songs. After being sued in 2015 over his song 'Thinking Out Loud,' Sheeran was compelled to submit his electronic devices for legal review.
He revealed that he had not owned a mobile phone since 2015, having switched it off after an Australian tour that year and moved to email. When powering it back on years later for the lawsuit, he found it was like traveling through time, revisiting messages from 2015 and even 2007.
This emotional experience, which included finding old conversations with deceased friends and estranged family members, inspired his song 'Old Phone.' Sheeran explained that he often processes negative life events by writing songs, turning them into cathartic musical expressions.
