Ed Sheeran recently reflected on the intense fan reaction to his cameo on Game of Thrones. Appearing on a podcast, Sheeran shared his thoughts on why his brief role as a singing Lannister soldier caused such a stir back in July 2017. He suggested his omnipresence in the media at the time made the appearance particularly jarring for audiences.

Despite other musicians like members of Coldplay and Snow Patrol also making appearances on the popular fantasy series, Sheeran's cameo generated significant backlash. He noted that he has often faced criticism throughout his career for various reasons. The singer revealed that his appearance was initially intended as a surprise gift for Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams, who was a fan of his music.

The episode, titled "Dragonstone," aired just months after the release of Sheeran's massive album "Divide." This timing, coinciding with the peak of his global fame, may have amplified the public's attention and subsequent criticism of his acting debut. The surprise of the cameo was reportedly spoiled by Sophie Turner prior to the episode's release.
