Bernard gained prominence for his role as Det. Styles on the NBC drama "Police Story," appearing in 90 episodes from 1974 to 1978. He also starred as Willis on "The White Shadow," a series set in a South Los Angeles high school.
Born in Philadelphia on July 4, 1939, Bernard's career spanned stage and screen. He appeared off-Broadway and made his film debut in "Shaft" (1971), later featuring in "Across 110th Street" and "Blue Thunder."
His extensive television credits include "Hardcastle and McCormick," "Mannix," "Kojak," "NYPD Blue," and "ER."
Bernard is survived by his sons, Edward and Mark, and four grandchildren. His wife, Shirley, passed away in 2005. His family fondly remembers his love for food, learning, and faith.
