Harry Shum Jr.: Dance Skill Isn't Enough on DWTS

He stated that a background in dance does not automatically lead to success on the show, suggesting that many contestants with dance experience do not advance far. Shum Jr. elaborated that "Dancing With the Stars" requires more than just proficient dancing; it involves elements of storytelling, showcasing one's personality, and building a connection with the audience and partner.

His insights came after he and professional partner Jenna Johnson achieved the highest score of the premiere night with their cha-cha performance, earning 21 points. However, Shum Jr. remains grounded, acknowledging that only half of the contestants had performed. He expressed his appreciation for the show's emphasis on these additional aspects beyond pure technical dance ability, indicating a deeper understanding of the competition's dynamics.
