Reunion Rocks Shoals Fest: Isbell & Drive-By Truckers Play 'Decoration Day'

Drive-By Truckers recently reunited with former member Jason Isbell for a special performance at Shoals Fest in Florence, Alabama. This marked Isbell's first full set with the band since his departure in 2007. The highlight was the complete performance of their 2003 album, 'Decoration Day,' an event twenty-three years in the making.

The album, released during the second Iraq war, focused on the struggles of the working class and those impacted by economic policies. Its themes of division, classism, and family trauma, set to intense musical arrangements, remain remarkably relevant to the current socio-political climate.

Co-frontman Patterson Hood reflected on the album's initial creation, noting the political divisions of the early 2000s. He expressed concern about the current political landscape, finding parallels to the anxieties of the era when 'Decoration Day' was conceived.

The enduring power of 'Decoration Day' was echoed by writer Wright Thompson, who stated its relevance will persist for generations. Musically, the album showcased the band's evolution, drawing from influences like Centromatic and Steve Earle, while honoring heroes who recorded in their hometown.

Writer Michael Farris Smith also attested to the album's timeless themes, suggesting it could be released today and still resonate with contemporary issues of neglected towns and persistent inequalities. The performance at Shoals Fest, featuring Isbell, underscored the album's narrative of division and reconciliation.
