The new Broadway production of Dreamgirls is still on track, but its premiere has been postponed from the planned fall 2026 opening. Producers Sonia Friedman, Sue Wagner, John Johnson, and LaChanze confirmed that the schedule is evolving as the major production elements come together.
Originally announced in September 2025 for a fall 2026 debut, the revival aims to be the first since the original production over four decades ago. The musical, inspired by Motown and 1960s-70s girl groups, follows three young Black women navigating the music industry.
Superstar Jennifer Hudson, an Oscar winner for her role as Effie White in the 2006 film, joined the production team as a producer earlier this year. She has expressed excitement about introducing Dreamgirls to a new generation and witnessing its transformative impact on aspiring stars.
Casting for the leading roles was intended to be through a worldwide search, with open calls held in various cities globally. While a theater, specific opening dates, and casting are yet to be confirmed, producers assure that the show will proceed.
