A serious on-set accident has impacted the production of Universal's live-action "How to Train Your Dragon 2." Earlier this month, a special effects technician suffered a severe injury at Sky Studios Elstree, the U.K. location for the film's current shooting schedule. The technician severed multiple fingers on one hand during an incident involving a saw in a workshop. Despite immediate medical attention and extensive surgery, the severed digits could not be reattached.
The incident highlights ongoing health and safety discussions within the film and TV industry. Last year, the U.K. crew member union Bectu and producer's union Pact released a joint statement concerning safety risks. Their research indicated that working beyond contracted rest periods, known as 'broken turnaround,' contributes to exhaustion, accidents, and near-misses, affecting both worker well-being and job safety.
"How to Train Your Dragon 2" is directed by Dean Deblois and stars Mason Thames, Nico Parker, and Gerard Butler, among others. The film is scheduled for release on June 11, 2027.
