The former Bampton Grammar School, a key filming location for the popular ITV drama Downton Abbey, has been fully restored thanks to a dedicated fundraising campaign.
Over the past decade, more than £70,000 was raised to save the historic 17th-century building, which appeared in every series of the show as Downton Cottage Hospital. This restoration project, which began before the show's arrival, was significantly accelerated by the building's role.
The success of the 'Downton Mile' campaign not only saved the grammar school but also established a one-mile tourist trail showcasing various filming locations around Bampton. The village, once a secluded area, has transformed into a popular tourist destination, attracting fans globally.
Now fully restored, the building features a shop catering to tourists, an updated library, and a versatile room available for local events, ensuring its continued value to the community.
