Richard Kelly's cult classic "Donnie Darko" has experienced an unexpected and significant box office resurgence in Mexico, 25 years after its Sundance premiere. Despite never having a commercial theatrical release in the country, the film's revival, led by Mexico City journalist Alondra Camacho and her distribution company Avena Cine, has captivated audiences.
The initiative gained momentum through collaborations with Edgar San Juan of Film Tank and Miguel Rivera of Cinépolis, Mexico's largest cinema chain. This partnership not only brought "Donnie Darko" to Mexican theaters but also expanded its reach to other Latin American countries.
Since its April 16 launch, the film has grossed MXN $2.3 million, performing exceptionally well against major studio releases. It has been shown on 69 screens across Mexico and additional Cinépolis locations in Chile, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Costa Rica.
Director Richard Kelly visited Mexico City on April 6, participating in special screenings and a masterclass. He expressed his gratitude for the widespread enthusiasm, noting the film's ability to connect with new generations and reaffirm the value of theatrical experiences.
Kelly reflected on the film's difficult initial release in 2001, highlighting its longevity and unexpected success in markets like Mexico. He sees this resurgence as a testament to "Donnie Darko's" enduring appeal and potential for future ambitious projects.
Following this success, Avena Cine is preparing to release Sarah Jacobson's 1997 film "Mary Jane's Not a Virgin Anymore" in Mexican theaters later this year, indicating a promising future for repertory cinema.
