Doctor Foster, the acclaimed BBC psychological drama, is returning for a third and concluding season, with filming set to commence this spring in the UK. Suranne Jones reprises her BAFTA-winning role as Dr. Gemma Foster, alongside Bertie Carvel as Simon and Tom Taylor as their son Tom.
The synopsis reveals that ten years after enacting revenge on her unfaithful husband Simon, Gemma is a GP on the verge of remarriage. However, as her wedding day approaches, her past resurfaces, jeopardizing her happiness and reputation. Gemma must confront her past to protect her loved ones.
Lead actress Suranne Jones stated that the timing was right for Gemma's return, emphasizing the need for Tom, now an adult, to reappear with crucial questions. Jones highlighted the season's focus on accountability and the difficulty of severing ties with past traumas.
Series creator Mike Bartlett expressed his hope to tell the final part of Gemma's story, focusing on a woman seeking justice in an unequal world. The first two seasons were a significant success, with the finale of Season 2 drawing nearly 10 million viewers in the UK. Doctor Foster has also become a highly successful international BBC Studios' scripted format, with 15 adaptations.
Lindsay Salt, BBC Director of Drama, welcomed the series back for its epic final chapter, acknowledging the writing, production team, and cast's contributions to its previous success. John Hardwick is directing the new season, with Jude Liknaitzky and Roanna Benn executive producing alongside Bartlett and Jones. Drama Republic is producing for BBC iPlayer and BBC One.
