- Dwayne Johnson to reprise his role as the shape-shifting demigod Maui

In a move that has fans of the original 2016 animated film 'Moana' eagerly anticipating, Disney has announced the release of a live-action remake, set to hit theaters on July 10, 2026. Directed by Thomas Kail, the new version will feature a diverse cast, including Laga'aia in the title role of the wayfinder Moana.
The trailer for the upcoming film has already been released, offering a glimpse of the denizens of Motunui, the shape-shifting demigod Maui (played by Dwayne Johnson), and the intimidating tribe of Kakamora. Rounding out the cast are John Tui as Moana's father, Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as her mother, Sina, and Rena Owen as her Gramma Tala.
The live-action remake of 'Moana' is part of Disney's ongoing efforts to bring popular animated properties to the big screen in a new format. The studio recently put a new version of 2010's 'Tangled' back in development, following the mixed reception of the live-action 'Snow White' film. However, the live-action remake of 'Lilo & Stitch' was a massive summer hit, and the prequel movie 'Mufasa: The Lion King' also had a strong showing when it debuted late last year.
