Disney's plans for a live-action remake of the 2010 animated film 'Tangled' are gaining momentum. As of October 2025, the project has attached director Michael Gracey, known for his work on 'The Greatest Showman', to helm the new adaptation. Additionally, acclaimed actress Scarlett Johansson is being considered to take on the role of the villainous Mother Gothel.
The original 'Tangled' film, which centered on the long-haired princess Rapunzel, voiced by Mandy Moore, was a major box office success, grossing over $590 million globally. The live-action remake will be produced by Kristin Burr of Burr! Productions, along with Emmy-winning producer Lucy Kitada.
The development of the live-action 'Tangled' had been paused earlier this year, following the underwhelming box office performance of other recent Disney live-action remakes, such as 'Snow White'. However, the studio has since found success with the live-action 'Lilo & Stitch' and the prequel film 'Mufasa: The Lion King', which debuted late last year. This renewed confidence in the live-action format has paved the way for the 'Tangled' remake to move forward.
