Disney+ Loses Value as Marvel, Star Wars Shows Cancelled

Disney+'s ambitious streaming strategy, built on the back of Marvel and Star Wars content, appears to be failing. The service has lost its initial appeal as no new live-action Marvel or Star Wars shows are currently in development.

The recent cancellation of "Wonder Man," despite its critical acclaim and association with director Destin Daniel Cretton, highlights a troubling trend for Marvel on the platform. While "VisionQuest" and "Daredevil: Born Again Season 3" are slated for release, they have already been filmed, with no further Marvel series confirmed or rumored.

Star Wars faces a similar challenge. While "The Ninth Jedi" and "Ahsoka Season 2" are approaching, and "Maul-Shadow Lord" has been renewed, the franchise's overall TV presence is dwindling. This decline suggests Disney+'s core value proposition—providing a constant stream of new, popular Marvel and Star Wars content—has eroded significantly.

When Disney+ launched in 2019, it aimed to leverage the massive success of Marvel movies and revitalize the Star Wars franchise through television. However, the execution has fallen short, with many Star Wars shows receiving mixed reviews and Marvel's output being inconsistent. This has left subscribers who joined for franchise content feeling underserved, essentially paying for reruns outside of animation.
