Angela Jain, the new head of content at Disney+ EMEA, has announced a strategic shift towards commissioning and funding more original productions from the region. This initiative signals a commitment to expanding the streamer's local content slate, backed by additional financial investment.
Jain emphasized that while a meticulous approach to project selection will persist, the streamer intends to produce a greater volume of local content. This expansion includes a focus on balancing scripted and unscripted programming, with a particular aim to commission more unscripted series, reality shows, and factual entertainment.
The strategic push at Disney+ EMEA is set to include new shows such as an Italian murder mystery, a Turkish vampire comedy, and a Spanish docuseries about abandoned children, all announced at Series Mania. The goal is to increase the frequency of local originals, ensuring they are not widely spaced out.
Jain highlighted that the success of local originals will be primarily measured by their performance within their commissioning markets, focusing on talkability and cultural impact. While international travel is desired, the initial objective is to resonate locally.
Disney+ also intends to explore further partnerships with legacy broadcasters. The streamer has already established agreements with entities like the UK's ITV and Germany's ZDF Studios, with ongoing exploration into additional collaborative opportunities.
