Dirty Dancing Musical Tour Announced

"Dirty Dancing: The Musical," a stage adaptation of the classic 1987 romantic drama, is preparing for its North American tour. The production will commence its journey this August in Saint Paul, Minnesota, making its debut at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts. Further details regarding additional tour cities and the cast will be revealed at a later time.

The stage show is developed by Eleanor Bergstein, who also penned the original film's screenplay. Lonny Price, an actor from the original movie, will direct the touring rendition. The musical aims to capture the essence of the film that famously included the line "nobody puts Baby in a corner" and captivated audiences with the romance between Frances "Baby" Houseman and dance instructor Jonny Castle.

This theatrical expansion is part of Lionsgate's strategy to extend its film properties to the stage, with other projects like "La La Land" and "Wonder" also in development. The company views "Dirty Dancing" as a timeless story of empowerment and coming-of-age, relevant to contemporary audiences. Lionsgate also recently announced a sequel to the "Dirty Dancing" film, with Jennifer Grey set to return.
