Supermassive Games is set to release Directive 8020 on May 12, 2026, marking the first space-themed entry in The Dark Pictures Anthology. This new horror experience will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Executive producer Dan McDonald revealed the long-standing desire to create a sci-fi horror game.
The narrative follows the crew of the colony ship Cassiopeia, awakened prematurely from hypersleep. Their mission to save a dying Earth is interrupted when the ship crash-lands on a planet 12 light-years away. There, they encounter a dangerous shapeshifting creature.
McDonald discussed the blend of terror and hope inherent in space exploration, referencing the Challenger disaster as a stark reminder of its dangers. He stated that space is not safe, likening a spaceship to a "tin can with death on the other side," yet acknowledged humanity's persistent draw to it. The game seeks to capture this duality.
Directive 8020 promises a fresh challenge for the development team and players alike, offering a different setting from previous anthology installments like the ghost ship or witch trials. The game explores the vastness and peril of the sci-fi genre, drawing parallels to iconic space horror media.
