The 25th anniversary of Farhan Akhtar's directorial debut, 'Dil Chahta Hai', has sparked a nostalgic look back at its creation. Director Farhan Akhtar, alongside stars Aamir Khan and Saif Ali Khan, recently reflected on the film's production, particularly a pivotal scene. This scene involved Akshaye Khanna's character, Sid, slapping Aamir Khan's character, Aakash, during a heated argument.
Farhan Akhtar revealed that the slaps were not simulated as is typical in filmmaking. Aamir Khan consented to receiving real slaps, enduring significant discomfort, including visible redness and swelling on one side of his face. The authenticity required for this moment led to approximately 17 takes to capture the necessary camera angles and emotional impact.
Akhtar explained his directorial approach, admitting he instructed Khanna to deliver the slap slightly ahead of cue to ensure Aamir Khan's genuine surprise. Khan himself advocated for the continued use of real slaps even in close-up shots, feeling it enhanced his character's emotional response. He recalled that after filming concluded, his face bore clear marks from the repeated impacts.
Another memorable slap occurred between Saif Ali Khan's character, Sameer, and Suchitra Pillai's Priya. Pillai also shared that her character was directed to slap for real, requiring three attempts. She recounted a humorous encounter with Saif Ali Khan's mother, Sharmila Tagore, who inquired about the slap, responding that she hoped it was a hard one.
