A theatrical production titled Mrs. Jarley's Waxworks Spring Collection is set to entertain audiences this Saturday and Sunday, April 25-26. This show revives a character and concept originally conceived by Charles Dickens in The Old Curiosity Shop. The production aims to bring Mrs. Jarley and her travelling waxworks, first performed in Lostwithiel, Cornwall in 1890, to a contemporary stage.
Writer, director, and producer Merryn Threadgould explains that the show has a life of its own, inspired by audience affection. Attendees can anticipate meeting figures such as the Green Bishop and Mr. Camborne, a robot designed for spring cleaning. The immersive experience includes audience participation with props like floral hats and moustaches, enhancing the Cornish springtime theme.
Mark Cordory, a professional maker for productions like Dr. Who, contributed to the show's visual elements, crafting characters from simple materials. Seventy individuals are involved, with three actresses portraying Mrs. Jarley. The show will present 10 performances across the weekend, featuring sound effects and figures that may resemble local townsfolk, alongside scenes depicting Cornish life and folklore.
