Director Wayne Wang's latest film, "Diary of a Mad Old Man," is set for its gala world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. The drama stars Fan Bingbing and Lily Franky and delves into the complexities of aging and desire.
The narrative follows a 69-year-old widow, Utsugi, played by Lily Franky, whose body is deteriorating after a stroke while his libido remains strong. He relies on his daughter-in-law, Susu, portrayed by Fan Bingbing, for care.
With Wang's signature artistic style, the film explores erotic desire and the psychological effects of loneliness. It examines the fine line between seduction and manipulation as Utsugi navigates his persistent sexual urges.
"Diary of a Mad Old Man" is an adaptation of Jun'ichirō Tanizaki's novel, which centers on an ordinary family home becoming an arena for forbidden desire. Wang drew parallels to his own awareness of mortality and the struggle between eros and the will to live.
The film's world sales agent, Rediance Films, expressed excitement for the collaboration with Wang, aiming to bring the adaptation to global audiences. The film will also have its Asian premiere in Busan.
Fan Bingbing will receive a Special Tribute Award at the Toronto Film Festival, which runs from September 10 to 20.
