Dharwad Auditorium: Rs 100 Crore Plan Meets Decades of Decay
19 Apr
Summary
- Iconic auditorium closed since 2022 due to decay and failed repairs.
- A Rs 100-crore redevelopment plan awaits state government approval.
- Closure limits opportunities for young and financially constrained artists.

The Dr Mallikarjun Mansur Kalabhavan in Dharwad, a prominent venue since the 1970s, has remained closed since 2022 due to structural decay and unsuccessful repair attempts. Initially renowned for hosting international music festivals, the auditorium first faced issues in the early 2000s, leading to its closure in 2005.
After a Rs 5 crore renovation completed in 2017, the building again deteriorated within three years, necessitating another closure in 2022. This absence of a large, affordable public space has curtailed opportunities for many artists, particularly the young and those with limited finances.
