French auteur Arnaud Desplechin is currently filming his latest feature, "The Thing That Hurts," in Brussels and Paris. The production features a stellar international cast, including Alfre Woodard, J.K. Simmons, Felicity Jones, and Noémie Merlant. Wes Anderson is executive producing this bittersweet comedy, which began principal photography on Tuesday, April 7.
The narrative centers on a group of patients who travel to Paris following the death of their esteemed American psychoanalyst. What starts as a memorial gathering transforms into a deeply personal examination of their lives. Unexpected bonds emerge as long-hidden truths about the therapist's influence are revealed.
Desplechin has described the film as a comedy about expats in Paris, drawing parallels to "Midnight in Paris." He envisioned it as a collection of seven stories revolving around the central figure of the psychoanalyst. The film is produced by Daya Fernandez and others for 3SIX9 Studios, CG Cinema, Alaz Film, and Wrong Men, with financing from Silver Screen Global.
Gravel Lake Entertainment has acquired the film for sales, marking their first acquisition. Company head Grant Mohrman emphasized their mission to support original voices in cinema. Desplechin, known for his premieres at Cannes, is set to deliver a film exploring themes of grief, identity, and human connection.
