Des Moines' Sleepy Hollow is once again transformed into a medieval wonderland for its annual Renaissance Faire. This year marks the 21st anniversary of the beloved event, which has been a September tradition since 2006. Thousands of Iowans flock to Sleepy Hollow for three weekends of festivities, immersing themselves in a bygone era.
The Faire offers a vibrant spectacle, featuring knights in shining armor, captivating magic shows, and thrilling jousts. Performers and attendees alike often embrace the theme, donning period clothing. Over 80 merchants contribute to the atmosphere, selling everything from trinkets to traditional turkey legs.
At the heart of the Faire's medieval charm is the art of jousting, led by Kevin Coble and his team, JoustEvolution. Coble, who fell in love with jousting nearly 30 years ago, brings his passion to Iowa, showcasing elaborate performances where knights on horseback engage in thrilling contests. These jousts, while following a story arc, allow for spontaneous action and surprise endings, keeping the crowds on the edge of their seats.
The Sleepy Hollow Renaissance Faire is located at 4051 Dean Ave. in Des Moines and is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on select September weekends. Children 12 and under receive free admission, and tickets can be purchased online. The Faire promises a full schedule of entertainment, including magic shows, bird of prey demonstrations, and, of course, the much-anticipated jousts.
