His character, Charlie Slater, was a fan favorite, known for his protective nature towards his predominantly female family in Walford, and first appeared on the show in 2000.

Born in East London in April 1933, Martin embarked on an acting career after leaving his job at Smithfield Meat Market in 1962. He previously worked in numerous other jobs and served in the Royal Air Force. His acting journey began as a stuntman, including roles in Doctor Who, before transitioning to acting and appearing in numerous other television series such as Z-Cars and The Sweeney.
