US Prof's Music Premieres in Asia

Associate professor Derek Jenkins of Missouri Western State University will have his musical composition, "Rock Bottom," performed at the prestigious 21st Thailand International Composition Festival. The festival is scheduled to take place from July 5 to July 9 at Mahidol University in Salaya, Thailand. His brass band piece was chosen from a competitive pool of 200 submissions, earning its spot among the 12 works selected for performance.

The Thailand International Composition Festival is a significant event dedicated to advancing contemporary music and fostering artistic exchange. It brings together composers, performers, scholars, and audiences globally. Jenkins expressed his excitement, noting that this performance is particularly exhilarating as it represents the world premiere of this version of his composition. He also highlighted the honor of being included among talented international artists.

While Jenkins will not be able to attend the festival in person, he will receive recordings of the performance. This occasion is especially meaningful for him, as it will be the first time one of his pieces is performed in Asia. Jenkins, who joined the MoWest faculty in 2024, has had his music performed across the United States, Europe, Canada, and Brazil.
