The cult horror film "Der Fan," originally released in 1982, is set to receive its first-ever U.S. theatrical run, presented in a new 4K restoration by Fun City Editions. The movie chronicles the escalating, cannibalistic obsession of a teenage runaway with a Neue Deutsche Welle pop singer.
Writer/director Eckhart Schmidt's disturbing psychological thriller is notable for its sinister synth-pop soundtrack, provided by the band Rheingold. The restoration utilizes the original 35mm camera negative and presents the film with its original stereo soundtrack, a feature not heard since its 1982 German release.
"Der Fan" will premiere at the Metrograph in Lower Manhattan on August 28. This screening is part of a curated film series titled "That Most Taboo of Red Meats." Following its New York debut, the film is scheduled for limited engagements in Los Angeles, Madison, Austin, Portland, Santa Ana, San Francisco, and Minneapolis/St. Paul, with additional dates anticipated.
