Delhi Metro Station Design Faces DUAC Overhaul
8 Apr
Summary
- DUAC flags safety and accessibility concerns with metro station design.
- Travelators and long ramps require significant redesign for usability.
- Shading device and vertical connectivity proposals need revision.
A proposal for a promenade and underground plaza connected to the Yuga Yugeen Bharat Museum metro station in New Delhi has been returned for revisions. The Delhi Urban Arts Commission (DUAC) cited design and planning issues, particularly concerning safety and usability.
The commission highlighted the need for significant changes to the promenade's design. DUAC recommended removing proposed travelators along the 100-meter passage due to potential safety risks and maintenance difficulties. They also suggested design interventions for the 92-meter ramp to improve pedestrian experience.
Further recommendations included integrating solar panels into a space-frame system for better shading and renewable energy generation. DUAC also stressed clear demarcation of ingress and egress zones for crowd management and compliance with universal accessibility norms.
Vertical connectivity and service element concealment were also addressed. DUAC advised consolidating lifts and ensuring all utility services are hidden. The project's location within the Central Vista precinct adds another layer of scrutiny due to heritage site considerations.
