The Decemberists have released 'Long Live the King,' an EP that follows their chart-topping album, 'The King Is Dead.' This collection features six songs, including demo tracks and a previously released cover, offering a glimpse into material that didn't make the main album.
Despite being a compilation of "remainders," the EP demonstrates the band's signature literary allusions, with tracks like 'Sonnet' referencing Dante. More significantly, the songs delve into the emotional and physical distances that define the relationships within Meloy's narratives.
These six songs, while not a cohesive album, provide valuable insight into Colin Meloy's songwriting. His ability to explore the complexities of his characters' connections and separations reveals a profound humanist perspective, even within his characteristic storytelling.
