Bowie's Cheap Car Service Adventure
12 Jul
Summary
- David Bowie's drummer suggested cheaper car service in Hull.
- Bowie stayed with drummer's parents in Brisbane Street.
- An exhibition featuring Bowie artifacts is coming to Hull.

In 1970, David Bowie's then-drummer John Cambridge suggested an unconventional solution for the rock star's expensive car service. Cambridge convinced Bowie to drive his Rover 100 from London to Hull for a significantly cheaper MOT.
Bowie even lodged with Cambridge's parents in Brisbane Street, a working-class area of Hull. Cambridge recalled that the cost of the service in London was so high, one could reportedly buy a car in Hull for that amount.
Cambridge was instrumental in forming Bowie's iconic band, The Spiders from Mars. This group launched three musicians from East Yorkshire into the glam-rock scene. Later this month, a touring exhibition celebrating Bowie's life and music was announced. It is scheduled to visit Ferens Art Gallery in Hull in early 2028, featuring costumes and instruments from that era.
