An immersive exhibition in London, titled 'You're Not Alone,' is set to premiere rare footage of David Bowie performing 'Heroes' at Earl's Court in 1978. This "holy grail" material, discovered in the artist's archives, features previously unseen camera angles, offering a transformative experience for visitors.
The exhibition, opening in April at Lightroom in King's Cross, will also present Bowie's last performance as Ziggy Stardust in 1973. The venue's immersive design, a three-storey concrete box with projections and spatial sound, aims to place attendees directly within the historical performances.
Show producer Mark Grimmer accessed extensive archives, including 90,000 items from the V&A and Bowie's New York collection. These materials, alongside digital renderings of stage designs, form seven non-chronological "chapters" of the hour-long show, narrated by Bowie himself.
The exhibition delves into recurring themes in Bowie's life, such as spirituality, transience, and mortality, as conveyed through his interviews and personal ephemera. It also highlights his voracious appetite for art and culture throughout his life, until his passing in 2016.
'You're Not Alone' is the fifth show at Lightroom, which opened in 2023. Separately, Bowie's childhood home in Bromley is undergoing a £500,000 restoration and is expected to open in late 2027.
