David Allen, who has died aged 72, was a scholar, educator, music critic, entrepreneur, and smallholder. Born in London, he studied music at St Catherine's College, Oxford, where he was known for his eccentric persona and a notable theatrical role. His academic pursuits included research into baroque composer Alessandro Stradella.
Allen taught at the University of Natal in South Africa before returning to the UK. He established himself as a home tutor and was a music critic for the North Kent Press. He later co-partnered in a youth training scheme.
In the late 1980s, Allen and his wife, Ann, became involved with Braziers Park, an educational charity in Oxfordshire, where he served as director of studies. They later relocated to Ceredigion, Wales, to a smallholding.
