10 Jul
Summary
- Friend believes Chase's life could have been different with support.
- Chase died from AIDS, compounded by polysubstance use.
- Initiative 'Daveigh's Law' aims to support young actors.

Amy Castle, a childhood friend of the late Daveigh Chase, has shared her perspective on the former child star's tragic passing at age 35. Castle expressed that Chase's life, which ended on June 16, 2026, "didn't have to be this way," suggesting that with proper support, things could have been different. Chase, known for her roles as Samara in "The Ring" and voicing Lilo Pelekai, passed away after a battle with meningitis and a blood infection that led to sepsis.
Weeks after the initial reports, the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner officially ruled Chase's cause of death as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). This was alongside significant conditions including chronic polysubstance use. Castle believes addiction often stems from unprocessed trauma and a lack of necessary support systems, a situation she felt Chase experienced.
Castle and Chase formed a close bond as young actors in the early 2000s, sharing a manager and attending auditions together. Castle remembers Chase as a generous, kind, and genuine individual with a natural acting talent. She recently ran into Chase in September 2006 at Universal City Walk in Los Angeles.
In the wake of Chase's death, Castle has initiated "Daveigh's Law." This grassroots effort aims to establish a support system for young SAG-AFTRA members, providing resources and a hotline. Castle is committed to this cause long-term, advocating for better protection and support for child actors, particularly when parental support may be lacking or misaligned with the child's best interests.
