The upcoming Tamil film 'Dashamakan' is set to bring an action and political drama to the screen, with its narrative deeply rooted in the North Chennai area of Dashamakan. Director Vineeth Varaprasad, previously known for 'Lift,' is helming the project.
Actor Harish Kalyan portrays a struggling lower-middle-class rapper and dedicated significant effort to authentically embody his character. He even performed a rap song within the film, drawing inspiration from the booming indie rap culture and its focus on societal issues. Kalyan spent time with local rappers, who also appear in the film as his 'area friends,' to learn the craft.
Preity Mukhundhan stars as an Anglo-Indian girl from the same neighborhood, sharing a love song duet with Kalyan. She described the filming experience as comfortable and collaborative, despite the demands of preparing for multiple characters simultaneously. The ensemble cast also features Sathyaraj and Sunil.
Maintaining realism was a priority, with the filmmakers auditioning around 400 actual rappers to ensure authenticity in depicting the rap scene. Cinematographer Karthik Ashokan highlighted the director's clear vision and support, while costume designer Rithesh Selvaraj noted the collaborative effort in establishing the film's color palette.
