Sixty years after its original premiere, the cult classic gothic soap opera Dark Shadows is making a comeback. Warner Bros. Animation has announced plans to revive the series as an adult animation, promising to blend its signature gothic, horror, and supernatural genres.
The new adaptation aims to capture the dark twists and romantic intrigue that characterized the original show's extensive run. Lisa Holdsworth, known for her work on "Discovery of Witches," is attached as an executive producer and showrunner.
This revival is the latest in a series of attempts to reimagine Dark Shadows. Previous efforts include a 1991 primetime series on NBC, a 2004 pilot for the WB that never aired, a 2019 project titled "Reincarnation" that The CW passed on in 2020, and Tim Burton's 2012 film adaptation.
The original Dark Shadows series, which chronicled the Collins family in Collinsport, Maine, with a supernatural flair, is currently available for streaming on platforms like Tubi, Pluto TV, Hulu, and Peacock.
