In September 2025, Daredevil actor Matthew Lillard expressed his eagerness to join James Gunn's newly revamped Warner Bros. DC Universe (DCU) franchise. Lillard, who was recently cast in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, told the crowd at Los Angeles Comic-Con that he's been wanting to be part of a superhero world for a long time.
Noting his past collaboration with Gunn on the Scooby-Doo films, in which Lillard starred as the iconic character Shaggy, the actor revealed that the DCU director is "one of my dear friends." Lillard joked that he's "waiting for that invitation" from Gunn, hoping the director hasn't lost it in the mail.
While Lillard won't be playing a superhero in Daredevil: Born Again, he's eager to join the DCU in some capacity. Gunn has previously stated that he's open to casting actors he's worked with before, both in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and on other projects.
