Sydney is set to host the "Dance Reflections" festival in January, its inaugural event in the Southern Hemisphere. This international dance program will present 11 works making their Australian debut, originating from countries including France and South Africa.
The festival's centerpiece is Rachid Ouramdane's "Outsider," featuring 21 dancers and four elite athletes navigating high wires. This performance will take place in the newly renovated Cutaway at Barangaroo, utilizing the space as a purpose-built theatre for the first time.
"Dance Reflections" is funded by Van Cleef and Arpels and has previously been staged in London, New York, Hong Kong, and Seoul. The Sydney program also includes works by (La)Horde, known for collaborating with artists like Madonna and Rosalía, and Leïla Ka, who has choreographed for Beyoncé.
Complementing the international acts, the festival will offer free performances, including Trisha Brown's "Roof Piece" at the Art Gallery of NSW and Cassiel Gaube's "Soirée d'études" at Carriageworks. This diverse offering aims to appeal to a wide audience, from classical ballet to contemporary and queer-inspired dance.
