Dalhousie Student's Chance Encounter Sparks Remarkable Musical Journey for Leith Fleming-Smith

In November 2025, Leith Fleming-Smith, a former Dalhousie University student, is now one of Halifax's most sought-after musicians. His remarkable journey began in 2012 when, as a 19-year-old electrical engineering student, he attended a frosh event where the R&B funk band The Mellotones was performing. Impressed by their show, Fleming-Smith joined the band on stage, seizing the unexpected opportunity.

This chance encounter proved to be a pivotal moment in his life, as Fleming-Smith's passion for music took center stage. Over the next few years, he continued to perform with The Mellotones, gaining recognition in the local music scene. Despite pursuing his studies, first in economics and then in history, Fleming-Smith remained dedicated to his musical pursuits, even writing term papers while on tour with various bands.

Upon graduating in 2016, Fleming-Smith did not seek a traditional job, instead focusing full-time on his burgeoning music career. Today, he is a keyboardist and session musician, touring with acclaimed artists such as Matt Mays and Crash Test Dummies. Known for his infectious enthusiasm and theatrical stage presence, Fleming-Smith has become a beloved figure in the Halifax music community, with his solos often bringing crowds to their feet.
