Willem Dafoe delivers a performance of intelligence and self-possession as Ed Saxberger, a solitary New York postal worker and former poet. In the 1970s, Saxberger was part of the bohemian scene, but his work faded into obscurity. Decades later, a young, dandyish hipster named Meyers stumbles upon Saxberger's long-out-of-print poetry book, "Way Past Go."
Meyers, along with his excitable literary friends, declares Saxberger a neglected genius and offers him a chance at rediscovery and republication. Flattered and intrigued, Saxberger begins to associate with this younger, hip crowd. The group includes Gloria, a captivating and volatile actor who develops a crush on Saxberger, further complicating his quiet existence and stirring old desires for glory.
