A 91-year-old Fordson BB van, famous for its role in the classic British sitcom 'Dad's Army', requires over £10,500 in repairs. The vehicle, a prominent exhibit at the Dad's Army Museum in Thetford, Norfolk, was found to need costly work during its annual service. Some essential parts, such as axle carriers, have worn out and needed to be replicated as they are no longer available.
The museum is now facing a financial shortfall due to the extensive repair needs. To cover the costs, a fundraising page has been established, and initial contributions from supporters have already amounted to £1,200. A new book chronicling the van's history is also expected to aid in funding the necessary restorations.
Originally built in Dagenham in 1935, the van served in central London during World War Two before being discovered abandoned in the 1960s. It was later adapted for the sitcom by BBC designer Paul Joel and first appeared in 1969, making 18 subsequent appearances until 1977. The van was acquired by the museum at auction in 2012 and remains a popular attraction.
Museum chairman Stuart Wright noted that while annual servicing helps maintain the vehicle, the recent extensive repairs were unexpected and presented a 'perfect storm.' The van is frequently taken out for public appearances with museum volunteers, delighting fans and serving as a mobile ambassador for the museum.
