A beloved 1990s football-themed film is set to undergo a significant transformation into a stage musical, coinciding with its 30th anniversary. "When Saturday Comes," originally released on March 1, 1996, featured Sean Bean as Jimmy Muir, a brewery worker aspiring to play for Sheffield United.
The adaptation is spearheaded by Deano Jones, a self-proclaimed superfan and producer of stage shows. He has received the blessing of the film's original writer and producer, Jimmy Daly, to bring the story to life on stage. Jones envisions the musical as an uplifting and inspiring tribute to the film's gritty northern drama.
The original film was conceived by Sheffield-born Jimmy Daly, inspired by his own experiences. After a period of recovery from a car accident in 2017, Jones revisited the film and developed a concept for a musical. This led to him connecting with Daly, forming a friendship that has now culminated in this stage production.
With performances planned for theatres across Yorkshire in Summer 2026, the musical will feature numbers like 'I've Got a Trial' and a title song. Producers are actively seeking cast members with a Yorkshire background to emulate the spirit of the original film.
