Cuba's Reparto: From Barrios to Global Beat

Reparto, a dynamic musical genre originating from Cuba's housing projects, is now capturing global attention. This unique sound is characterized by its fusion of reggaeton, hip hop, timba, rumba, and the distinctive Cuban clave rhythm.

Its recent surge in popularity is partly attributed to the viral success of the song 'Dichavate' by Ya Ice Dilan, Helabusador, and Rey Tony. Since its release on Christmas Eve last year, the track has generated nearly 10 million video creations on TikTok alone, demonstrating its powerful emotional connection and broad appeal.

Reparto's roots trace back to the mid-2000s with early artists like the late Elvis Manuel, Adonis MC, El Uniko, and Chocolate MC, who coined the term 'reparto.' The genre gained increased visibility starting in 2018 when public WiFi became more accessible in Cuba, enabling a new generation of artists to utilize social media and elevate a genre once marginalized to the forefront of contemporary Cuban music.
